Libraries block Internet porn sites

WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg Public libraries are taking steps to make sure pornographic material on the Internet can't be seen by children using library computers.

Only one branch currently has public Internet access, but measures will be in place to prevent children and other library users from accessing obscene Web sites in the coming months, said Rick Walker, manager of library services.

"We're trying to create a balance to provide information to the public while responding to citizens' concerns about inappropriate material that can be accessed", Walker said.

Concerns have been raised that children have been able to access pornographic Web sites at Toronto public libraries.

Special softwre will be installed on computers in chidlren's areas and on some terminals used by adults that blocks out pornographic sites.
