Hotline set up for Johns

by Peter Smith

RED DEER -- About 200 johns captured on video during "Operation Kittyhawk" have the weekend to turn themselves in or face having a cop on their doorstep.

Police are advising these johns to phone a special "johns line" at 1-403-341-2068 tomorrow, Friday, or Saturday between noon and 8 p.m.

"If they haven't called by then, they can be assured we will be visiting them", said Red Deer RCMP Const. Dan Doyle.

A decision hasn't yet been made on whether charges will be laid against the johns. Between Jan. 24 and May 21, officers monitoring three targeted escort agencies logged 32,000 separate inquiries from potential johns.

Undercover cops monitored and video-taped 1,153 transactions in hotels and 680 more transactions in private homes.

"All these agencies have been running for years, including one which has been operating for 15 years", said Doyle.
